Petrographic characteristics and reservoir quality of Paleozoic-Mesozoic formations in An Chau Trough, North East of Vietnam
Abstract
The main objectives of this study are to contribute to the interpretation of the depositional environment, diagenetic history and reservoir quality of the rocks in Mesozoic An Chau trough by using the results of petrographic thin section, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD) analyses in combination with outcrop studies. A total of 52 samples were selected for these analyses. The integrated results from lithology, SEM and XRD analyses, as well as outcrop studies indicate that clastic, carbonate and volcano-plutonic rocks exist in the investigated area. The obtained results from combined studies suggest a poor to good reservoir quality of clastic rocks, whereas carbonate and volcano-plutonic rocks are not considered reservoirs in the area.
