Application of seismic wave absorption and velocity dispersion in petroleum exploration and production
Abstract
A combined analysis of dynamic and kinematic characteristics of seismic waves will facilitate the study of geological environment and the prediction of lithologic composition, reservoir properties and fluids. The absorption parameters have been used as hydrocarbon indicators. The characteristics of non-ideal elastic media have been applied in petroleum exploration to perform the following tasks: identifying petroleum reservoirs in the wells according to vertical seismic profi le (VSP) and acoustic data; predicting and discovering petroleum reservoirs based on surface seismic data; monitoring petroleum reservoirs under production; controlling underground gas storage; and increasing oil recovery coefficient.
The “Absorption and Velocity Dispersion - AVD” method has been tested in Vietnam on some 2-D and 3-D seismic data recorded in Bach Ho and Dai Hung fields and in other areas. The results obtained show that the effectiveness of the AVD method is quite good, as it confirms the existing petroleum reservoirs and discovers the other anomalies in new hydrocarbon reservoirs. It is, therefore, essential to increase the application of seismic wave absorption and velocity dispersion method in petroleum prospecting, exploration and production in order to enlarge the production areas, discover new exploration and production sites, and increase hydrocarbon reserves at the lowest costs.
