Study on preparation of KNO3/γ-Al2O3 catalyst for the synthesis of methyl ester used as a component for biokerosene blend
Abstract
Gamma aluminum oxide (γ-Al2O3) supported potassium nitrate (KNO3) was synthesised through impregnation method to form a solid catalyst. The material was then calcined at 500 - 800oC to study the decomposition of KNO3 on its surface. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) were applied to determine phase type of the catalyst which showed that there was a transformation from KNO3/γ-Al2O3 phase to K2O/γ-Al2O3 phase with an extreme increase in basic strength at 750oC. This heterogeneous catalyst was used to synthesise biofuel from coconut oil. Optimal conditions for trans-esterification reaction were also studied.
