Some factors influencing gas hydrate formation and preservation in the East Sea of Vietnam
Abstract
Through the integration and analysis of geological, geophysical and oceanographical data, it is recognised that there are potential of gas hydrates in the deep water areas of the East Sea of Vietnam resulting from suitable factors for gas hydrate formation and existence. However, gas hydrate potential can be reduced by many instable factors (temperature, pressure, salinity of sea and formation water, and limitations of source rocks). Furthermore, gas hydrate can be destroyed in areas of strong, young tectonic activities (earthquakes, faulting, eruption, sliding and erosion at the sea bottom, etc.). In general, exploration activities for gas hydrate in the past were very preliminary. Further studies are, therefore, needed to develop an effective plan for gas hydrate exploration that focuses on highly potential areas in the East Sea.
