Abstract

The Song Hong coal province is situated in the Hanoi trough with a total area of over 3,500 km2, spreading from Viet Tri (Phu Tho province) to Tien Hai (Thai Binh province). The exploration of coal-bed methane (CBM) has been carried out in this area for several years, and lignite and sub-bituminous coal bed have been found in Tien Hung formation in CBM exploration well 01-KTTB-08. The macerals from the huminite group constitute more than 80% of the coal. The amount of liptinite is 5 - 10%. Inertinite group macerals are less than 5%. Minerals are mainly siderite and framboidal pyrite. The petrographical properties and the coal facies indices indicate deposition in limnic-telmatic mire and coal is at a low coalification stage.
