Abstract

Climate change is causing many negative impacts on the earth and humans. Among the methods to reduce CO2 emissions from human activities into the atmosphere, CO2 capture and sequestration in geological formations (CCS) has become an effective one. CCS includes four stages: capture, transport, storage, and monitoring of CO2 underground to ensure safe and long-term storage. The mechanisms for storing CO2 include physical and chemical/geochemical. Suitable objects for CO2 storage are depleted oil and gas fields, deep saline aquifers, basalt formations, or coal seams that cannot be extracted by conventional methods. The article provides an update on the status of research and implementation of CCS globally, in the Southeast Asian region and Vietnam specifically, and summarises the findings of various studies on the potential for geological storage of CO2 in Vietnam.
