Abstract

As of June 30, 2023, there are more than 80 open blocks (including relinquished areas) on the continental shelf of Vietnam. The remaining hydrocarbon potential of Vietnam is about 1.5 - 2 billion barrels of oil equivalent, of which 30% is oil and 70% is gas.
The paper gives a review of oil and gas exploration in the period 2011 - 2022 and suggests some solutions to attract investment into open blocks, offshore Vietnam, in the future based on favorable conditions pursuant to the Law on Petroleum (Law No. 12/2022/QH15 was passed by Legislature XV of the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam at its 4th session on 14 November 2022 and takes effect from 01 July 2023).
