The structural setting of Nam Con Son basin interpreted from seismic data
Abstract
Nam Con Son basin is located at the junction of two tectonic settings, i.e. the strike-slip displacement on the western side of the basin and the spreading of the East Sea on the opposite side. This may produce the basin’s complex structural setting with multi-directional fault systems. The paper presents the difference between the tectonic settings of the western and eastern sides of the basin based on seismic interpretation. The seismic interpretation results reveal that the first rifting phase in Eocene-Oligocene occurred on both sides. The second rifting phase in the Middle Miocene mainly occurred on the eastern side. This difference may drive the development of three faults systems, which are NE-SW, sub-longitude, and E-W orientations that controlled the formation and development of the basin.
