The application of vertical electric sounding for defining geological structure and coal distribution in the Cenozoic sediments in An Nhon - Binh Dinh area, central Vietnam
Abstract
This paper presents the results of studies on the geological features and the distribution of coal layers in the Cenozoic sediments in the An Nhon - Binh Dinh area. The results were based on the newly acquired vertical electric sounding data in combination with regional geological data taken from previous studies. The integrated results showed that the ellipsoid-shape Cenozoic An Nhon trough, covering an area of approximately 20km2, was fi lled up by upper Miocene sediments of Song Ba formation with a series of thin-bedded coals. In general, the coaly accumulations are not considerably adequate for commercial exploitation, thus suggesting a poor potential of coal-bed methane (CBM) in the investigated area.
